Question:
How has the Supreme Court become more inclusive of gender and
race?
Answer: Over the last few decades, more women and minorities
have been appointed to the court. Lyndon Johnson appointed
Thurgood Marshall, the first African American justice, in
1967. Ronald Reagan delivered on a campaign promise and
appointed the first female justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, in
1981. In 2009, Barack Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor, the
first Hispanic justice.
