Question: Since the early twentieth century, what has happened to the size of the bureaucracy?

Answer: It has ballooned…BIG TIME. Two large escalations occurred in the twentieth century. First, during the Progressive Era c1900-1920, new agencies were created to look after the health and well-being of consumers and citizens. All of these new agencies needed workers. So, thousands were hired and became bureaucrats. In the 1930s, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal created dozens of new offices to help cope with the Great Depression. All of those agencies also needed workers. The size of government increased, as specialization of jobs became common.
