10 TIPS ON RENTING A CAR FOR A ROADTRIP THAT WILL SAVE YOU SERIOUS CASH.

5. Inspect that car! Take pictures! Not to sound cynical, but a car company can truly ruin your trip. Save all of your receipts and take pictures of the vehicle if there is any damage. Also, let the management know about the car flaws. Once, I got charged on my credit card from a rental place in Canada $700. They goofed on the amount of days they thought I had the car. I read them my receipt number, and the money was instantly restored to my credit card.

6. Here’s a useful tip. Sometimes it pays to rent TWO different cars for your trip. In other words, you can rent one car from San Francisco to Denver with Alamo, and then do a Hertz rental from Denver to Dallas. Once again, with a little bit of research you can save hundreds of dollars. The one way drop off rates are different at all major destinations. Different companies can have the cheapest rental, depending on the city.

7. Along the same lines … if you want to cross International boundaries with your car, then do the research. I wanted to get from Vancouver to Portland. But, each company had it 100 dollars a day because of the border change. However, I found one company, Dollar, that allowed me to go from Vancouver to Seattle for 50 USD. Then, I rented a second car from Seattle, and took it to Portland at a normal rate. Before you go from Glacier National Park in Montana, to Banff in Alberta, make sure the rental car company allows you to cross over country lines, before you return it back to Montana.
