Question: What are the
qualifications to hold major office?
1. House of
Representatives - Must be 25 years old, a US citizen for 7
years, and a resident of the state where serving. The term is
2 years.
2. Senate - Must
be 30 years old, a US citizen for 9 years, and a resident of
the state where serving. The term is 6 years.
3. President/Vice
President - Must be 35 years old,
a natural-born citizen,
and a US resident for 14 years. Each term in office is 4
years. Today, Representatives and Senators are elected by the
people, and the President is chosen by
electors
(explained later).
4. Supreme Court
Justices - No requirements. Appointed for life by the
President, and confirmed by the Senate.
This life appointment
is supposed to free justices from political pressures, like
those experienced by elected officials.
