Office-group ballot and party-column ballot

Office-group ballots list the candidates of all political parties by the office which is being contested.

Party-column ballots separate all of the offices into columns based on the political party. Therefore, one could merely choose one column and vote a straight-ticket of one party. This type of ballot discourages ticket-splitting, or voting for candidates from different parties on Election Day. Independent voters, or those who aren’t affiliated with one party in particular, tend to be ticket-splitters.

Another ballot to be aware of is the absentee ballot, which can be filled out before the election if one can’t make it to the polling place (place where people vote) on Election Day.
