Definition: Boxer Rebellion
Decades after the
Opium Wars exhibited resistance to
imperialism, China had the Boxer Rebellion. Boxers were Chinese
people who resented imperialism. They were upset about foreign
nations taking over what they believed was rightfully theirs. In
addition, they resented Chinese conversions to Christianity. In
1900, they began a rebellion. European nations and the United States
ended this uprising rather quickly. It would be decades before China
rid itself of all foreign interests.
