Definition: Berlin Conference, 1884-85
European nations assembled in Berlin
to divide up the lands of Africa. Of course, no African leaders were
there for this division of land. Britain and France came away from
the conference with the most territory. In Africa, Liberia
maintained independence. Ethiopia, under Menelik II, pushed back the
Italian military to also remain independent.
