This was a unique
experience. I had read about the Shanghai Ghetto before coming to
China. The man above was one of the nicest people we met on our trip.
He explained to me the union between the Chinese people and the Jews.
Having a man explain to me about Jewish Heritage in Asia was
completely unique and unexpected. Many people have not heard of the
Shanghai Ghetto. But when Japan occupied China during WWII, they did
not enforce visa laws. Because quotas were filled up in free countries
like the United States, Shanghai became a reluctant, but necessary
choice for many Jews from Austria and Germany. Here they set up a
network during WWII. The Jewish Star he is displaying has the book of
Genesis written on it in Chinese.
